Southerland, 28 Robert Southerland, 28, 33 William Southerland, 28 THE DEVELOPMENT OF BRUNSWICK COUNTY Note: As originally published in paper format, this volume included maps showing the evolution of the county. Maps are not included in the revised/electronic version due to legibility and file size considerations. Instead, a verbal description is provided. As originally formed (created in 1720, and with its county government established in 1732), Brunswick County was a giant county, covering a large portion of Southside Virginia. Its boundaries extended eastward as far as modern Southampton, westward to the Blue Ridge Mountains, southward to North Carolina, and northward to Botetourt County. Within its borders were the modern counties of Greensville, Brunswick, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Charlotte, Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Patrick and Franklin, as well as portions of Bedford, Campbell, and Appomattox counties. With the creation of Lunenburg County in 1746, Brunswick was reduced to a fraction of its former size, comprising only modern day Brunswick and Greensville counties. The creation of Greensville County in 1781 left Brunswick at its present boundaries. ===================================================================== Capt.
